$10,000 Scholarship to Further Women's Education in Construction
Former businesswoman of the year Janet Holmes a Court will tomorrow launch the inaugural $10,000 Women in Construction Scholarship, jointly sponsored by Bovis Lend Lease and the Victorian Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC).
The launch will take place during NAWIC’s 10th anniversary conference at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Melbourne.
Initiated by Bovis Lend Lease’s Victorian project managers Lisa Okkonen and Michelle Squires, the postgraduate scholarship is the first of its kind in the industry. Bovis Lend Lease developed the Women in Construction Scholarship with NAWIC to expand opportunities and support for women to complete their postgraduate studies, and to encourage research that advances the construction industry in the fields of design, property and construction.
The scholarship is open to female applicants in Victoria who are enrolled, or in the process of application approval, for Masters by research, PhD, or other research doctorates.
“Bovis Lend Lease is proud to sponsor and support a scholarship that helps women in our industry attain their Masters or PhD,” said Geoff Moore, General Manager of Bovis Lend Lease Victoria.
“The partnership between Bovis Lend Lease and NAWIC to establish this scholarship is our shared commitment to empower women and improve their opportunities in the construction industry as a whole.
“We hope this scholarship will reduce the financial pressures on women who commit to postgraduate studies in pursuit of their career progression in the industry.”
Mr Moore said the scholarship was aimed at improving women’s knowledge of the construction industry, developing better practices and techniques, and increasing innovation in the industry.
NAWIC National Director Alex Haynes said: “Many women leave the construction industry after five to 10 years. We believe this scholarship is a positive way to encourage women to think about diversifying their skills, and talents through research.
“We hope this will help them maintain their involvement in an industry that is lacking the multidisciplinary skills women can offer.”
Bovis Lend Lease has been actively involved in NAWIC since its inception 10 years ago through board membership, award sponsorship, mentoring and involvement in various NAWIC committees.
Application details for the 2006 Women in Construction scholarship are available through the NAWIC website: www.nawic.com.au. Application closes on December 16.
